INSECT DEVELOPMENT:  FROM EGG TO ADULT
There are three types of development recognized that insects will usually go through.

TWO STAGES:
Upon hatching, they look like a small adult.  The two-stage development is called Ametaboly.   Though other creatures in the animal kingdom will go through the two-stage development, there are not many insects that will.

THREE STAGES:
After hatching, the young insects are less similar in appearance to the adults.  They do not change completely in how they look, so this is called Incomplete Metamorphosis.  As a young insect, they may have small wing buds, but the wings are not noticeable until they are adults.  Molting or shedding of the skin makes them change in appearance. On land, these young insects are called Nymphs.  If they live in the water they are called Naiads.

Example:

FOUR STAGES:
This is a complete change in how the insect looks when it is young to how it looks as an adult.  This is called Complete Metamorphosis The pupa stage (cocoon type stage) is where the insect will go through a complete change in appearance to become a very different looking adult.
